crisis prevention

Programmes of food supplementation and fortification of foods in Chile date back to early last century. These programs have suffered permanent adjustments over time, adapting to the epidemiological changes of our population. The programmes in place today involve children, pregnant women, older adults and some specific high risk groups. The main goal of all programs is still maintaining optimal nutritional status of our population, development of institutional capacity in the field of promotion of healthy lifestyles; incorporating in this, its first stage, the woman and the child (a). What are the objectives? Protect the mother's health during pregnancy and breastfeeding and promote exclusive breastfeeding up to six months of age of the child. Introduce appropriate weaning practices. Reduce the proportion of infants with low birth weight. Foster growth and normal development of children of 6 years from gestation. Prevent and correct nutritional deficit.
